Continuing with the third installment in our five part series on Feng Shui tips for your home office space, this week we’re talking about sound and scent.
Practicing Feng Shui can be a great way to keep a happy balance in your office space. The key elements of water, fire, wood, and earth can help you find a calm balance and lead to more energy and productivity.

Part Four – Sound and Scent
Choose a Quiet Space
If you have a choice of what room you use for your home office, make sure that you consider using the one that is furthest away from known noise sources. For example, if you know that the neighbors have a swimming pool, and day times will be noisy on nice days, avoid using the rooms closest to them. If you can reduce the amount of external noise invading your home office then you can concentrate better.
Shut Your Door
If there are other people home it can be a good idea to shut your door while you work. Not only does it help you focus on your work, but removing the unnatural and external noises will also allow the Chi to travel around the space without major disruption.
Listen to Music
Playing some type of soothing, instrumental music can help you relax while you work. It can help you to relieve stress and calm your nerves. Remember to avoid music with lyrics, as this can become distracting. Amazon Prime has some great new age, classical and light jazz stations. Some of my favorite artists? Daniel May (New Age), Amrik (Spanish Guitar), David R. Maracle (Native American), and Dan Gibson (Nature, New Age and Atmosphere).
Balance Your Sound
Think about the sounds that make you happy, as well as the sounds that make you feel stressed. Try to use one to balance out the other. For instance, if you would rather be listening to your music than the dog barking outside, shut your window and turn up your music a little more.
Trying Burning Oil
Your office will smell better in a matter of seconds if you use an oil burner, and they use only a small amount of oil.
Not only will you fill your space with a welcoming scent, but you will also add an atmosphere of relaxation. A small, gentle flame is a very natural way of representing the key element of fire, and it makes the room feel like home.
There are several types of incense that are believed to promote healthy Chi as well as create a pleasant aroma in a room. Find a scent that makes you feel relaxed, or mix scents to increase your balance.
Use Lavender and Geranium
These two scents in particular will help to calm your nerves and keep everything in perspective. They are also normally available in many forms so choose the one that you prefer.
Boost with Citrus
If you want to stay awake and alert, even late at night, try using citrus scents like mandarin and tangerine. These scents increase the amount of energy in a space.
Remove Garbage Often
Nothing interrupts a rooms Chi like the bad smell of garbage, mildew, and mold. They can distract you from your work until you deal with them, and be very unpleasant. Make sure that you are removing any garbage from your work space often, especially if it’s food related.
